David Jones Drops 26 points as Tigers Dominate the 2nd Half vs #23 Cavaliers As They Seek More National Attention

Penny Hardaway’s Memphis Tigers basketball squad deserves more national respect. A matchup with 23rd ranked Virginia at home, was a night that national eyes would be on the program. A few years off a National Championship, Coach Tony Bennett brought a formidable ranked opponent to Fed Ex Forum.

David Jones rose to the occasion, as ESPN cameras rolled. He dropped 26 points on only 15 shots, fueling a second half rally that led to a 77-54 blowout win for the Tigers. Statement made.

The defense was relentless for Memphis in the 2nd Half (forcing 18 total turnovers) as Penny turned up the pressure. This seemed to frazzle Virginia- as their vaunted defense was exposed as Memphis built a 21 point lead before letting off the gas. Team leader Caleb Mills seemed to be at the heart of the fired up defense and he also added 11 points off the bench. Senior Center Malcolm Dandridge had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals to spark the ballclub.

This was the 4th win in a row for Memphis, including a big win over Clemson, as they climbed into the Top 25 this week. They also got great news with the word that former Kansas State Center Nae’Qwan Tomlin signed with the Tigers. He was actually at FedEx working out before the game. This adds another NBA-level talent to a revamped roster who is coming together with a 9-2 record.

Memphis hosts SEC foe Vanderbilt, coached by Jerry Stackhouse, on Saturday to try and go 5-0 at home to start the season.
