Memphis Grizzlies Add Sharpshooter Jaylen Wells in 2nd Round of the 2024 NBA Draft

In a move that could bolster their perimeter game, the Memphis Grizzlies snagged former Washington State standout Jaylen Wells with the 39th overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft. Wells, who made waves in Pullman after transferring from Sonoma State, showcased his prowess as a top-tier three-point marksman in the competitive Pac-12, leading the Cougars to the postseason.

Last season, Wells lit it up from beyond the arc, draining an impressive 41.7% of his long-range attempts while demonstrating a knack for catching and shooting with efficiency. Known for his quick release, Wells also proved reliable from the charity stripe, sinking 81% of his free throws.

Wells is projected to spend considerable time in the G League, fine-tuning his game and expanding his offensive repertoire beyond his lethal shooting stroke. At 6-foot-6, Wells possesses the size and athleticism that make him a promising prospect, particularly in today’s NBA where versatile shooters are in high demand.

While Wells shines on offense, particularly in catch-and-shoot situations, his defensive game is a work in progress. While capable on the ball, he’ll need to sharpen his off-ball awareness and overall defensive acumen to secure a lasting spot in the League.

For Memphis, securing Wells marks a strategic move to bolster their roster with a promising young talent who plays the Forward position.
